7 things that might be triggering your headaches and how to prevent them - Hyaluxe Body

Headaches are a very common condition that most people will experience many times throughout their lives. While headaches may be caused by many factors, here are seven common headache triggers and how to cope with them.

Dehydration

Dehydration is one of the most common triggers of headaches. When your body is dehydrated, it can cause your blood volume to decrease, which reduces the amount of oxygen that your brain receives. Dehydration affects the body on all levels causing dizziness, confusion and can even become a medical emergency.

How to prevent it: Make sure to keep track of your fluid intake and always keep a bottle of water near you. The amount of water that you need to drink  may vary, depending on the activity level, body weight, and environmental   temperature. As a general rule, you should aim to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water during the day.

Lack of sleep

There is no doubt that lack of sleep can trigger your headaches. When we sleep, all of our body parts repair and renew, including our brain, so it makes sense that when your sleep becomes more irregular you are more prone to having headaches.

How to prevent it: the best way to prevent headaches from lack of sleep, is to establish a regular sleeping routine. Most adults need between 7-8 hours of sleep per night, but this might vary depending on the person. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday, and avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine before bedtime.

Certain foods

Eating certain foods often trigger headaches. Common culprits like alcohol, chocolate, caffeine and processed food. These foods can change your brain chemistry , which can lead to headaches.

How to prevent it: If you notice that you are having headaches after eating a meal, it's best to identify which food is triggering it so you would avoid eating that certain food. You can also try to eat a healthy, balanced  diet, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains.

Poor posture

Poor posture causes tension in your upper back, neck and shoulders, which lead to headaches. It can also cause muscle imbalances which also leads to headaches and pain.

How to prevent it: avoid sitting or standing in one position for long periods of time. Make sure you sit or stand up straight, with your shoulders back and your chin tucked in. You can also try exercises that help correct your posture.

Stress

Stress is a major trigger of headaches. Stress can cause tight muscles in the shoulders and neck causing pain and headache. Stress can also cause changes in your blood pressure and blood sugar levels which trigger headaches.

How to prevent it : try stress relieving activities such as exercises, meditation or yoga can help. Therapy can also help you learn new strategies  to cope with stress.

Hormonal change

Women are three times more likely to end up with a headache than men, it happens because changes in estrogen levels can cause changes in brain chemicals, which lead to headaches.

How to prevent it : the best way to prevent hormonal headaches is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep.

Teeth grinding

Grinding your teeth at night, also known as bruxism, makes your jaw muscles contract  which causes a dull headache.

How to prevent it: you can wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth and jaw during your sleep, consulting with a dentist might also help you find other ways of teeth grinding .

In conclusion, headaches can be caused by a variety of factors, including dehydration , lack of sleep, stress, certain food, hormonal change..etc. By identifying the triggers that cause your headaches, you can take steps to prevent them and reduce your pain. Remember to maintain a healthy lifestyle, stay hydrated and seek medical help if your headaches become severe or frequent.
