Skin benefits of Chamomile

Skin benefits of Chamomile - Hyaluxe Body

Chamomile is a herb that comes from the Asteraceae family, it has been used for centuries for many health and skin benefits. It grows natively across Europe, but also in North America, Asia and Australia. Its golden blossoms are seen early in the summer and, when tasted, it has a slightly fruity flavor.

Two popular varieties of chamomile are Matricaria recutita (commonly known as German chamomile) and Chamaemelum Nobile (commonly known as Roman chamomile).

Both Roman & German chamomile contain an essential oil called chamazulene. It has a sweet apple-like smell that is extremely refreshing for the skin. It is also used as a mild tranquilizer, and for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Active Components of Chamomile:

Chamomile's therapeutic properties can be attributed to its rich composition of active components, including:

  • Chamazulene: A powerful anti-inflammatory compound that gives chamomile its distinctive blue hue.
  • Apigenin: A flavonoid with antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from oxidative stress.
  • Bisabolol: Known for its anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory effects, making it ideal for sensitive or inflamed skin.
  • Azulene: Another anti-inflammatory compound that aids in calming irritated skin.

5 skin benefits of Chamomile

Relieving inflammation

Chamomile can treat short-term and long-term skin inflammation. It contains the antioxidant apigenin, which aids in lowering inflammation by inhibiting the release of inflammation-causing chemicals.

Sometimes, too much UV exposure can cause DNA damage. Using chamomile can reduce DNA damage too.

Soothes sensitive skin

Having  sensitive skin is sometimes challenging to find skin products that aren’t prone to irritate or cause damage to it. Chamomile’s anti-inflammatory and healing properties appear to be especially soothing for sensitive skin types.

Research suggests that chamomile is able to block the prostaglandins that are responsible for skin inflammation, making chamomile the most suitable ingredient for people with sensitive skin.

Reduces the signs of aging

Another amazing benefit of chamomile is that it can reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles , aging spots and other common signs of aging.

Polyphenol and Phytochemicals are the two antioxidant properties that make this possible. These two nutrients can fight against free radicals and boost your cell regeneration process.

When applied to your skin, chamomile helps with cell and tissue renewal, giving you a youthful glow.

Helps Wounds to heal

The mild antiseptic qualities of chamomile, combined with its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, make it ideal for treating facial wounds. When dealing with open scratches or sores caused by outbreaks, incorporating a chamomile toner into your skincare routine can act as a preventive measure against infections. Also, it has been proven that chamomile can completely heal wounds faster than corticosteroids.

Treating Acne

If you are suffering from an active acne breakout, chamomile can help treat it. It also reduces bacteria and cleanses the skin making it a preventative for future breakouts too.

Additionally, chamomile’s anti-inflammatory nature can help reduce the redness and inflammation associated with acne. Chamomile's antibacterial properties make it  an important natural ingredient in acne-fighting skin related products.
